Discovering potentials for a fairer use of public spaces

Project Fairspace

The sustainable mobility of future generations will depend crucially on how "fairly" (meaning efficiently and compatibly) our increasingly scarce resources of energy, space and in many aspects also time are used and distributed. New design concepts are particularly in demand in urban areas. In the project "FAIRSPACE" we are developing an innovative tool to visualize current land use and the potential for a "fairer" distribution of space.

The flexible use of space and suitable planning parameters are necessary to promote sustainable, active forms of mobility. This project investigates the temporal use of public spaces in cities and uses an innovative tool developed by us to discover the potential for distributing them in a "fairer way". In this way, the usability and efficiency of the transport system can be displayed, for the first time by means of taking the temporal availability of space into account. This way it will be easier to argue transport policy decisions comprehensibly in the future.

This project is funded by bmvit and FFG and partnered by the Vienna University of Technology (Institute of Transport Sciences, research area for traffic planning and traffic engineering).
